Basketball Seasons
1976-77 Basketball Windows Season
- Walton, Lucas lead Portland to its only title
- 4 ABA teams join NBA; other ABA stars strengthen teams
- Top scorers: P. Maravich (31.1) … B. Knight (26.6) … K. Abdul-Jabbar (26.2)
Bill Walton (18.6 ppg, 14.4 rpg) made Portland one of the most popular champions, but new talent from the defunct ABA – in Portland’s case, Maurice Lucas (20.2 ppg, 11.4 rpg) – had more to do with the sudden rise of several NBA teams. That included finals loser Philadelphia, with 21-ppg men Julius Erving and George McGinnis. The New York Nets, Indiana, San Antonio and Denver joined the NBA from the ABA. So did stars from other ABA teams, like Erving, Lucas, Marvin Barnes and Moses Malone.
