Milestone highway: Larry Bird won his first MVP and finally got the best of Magic Johnson in a championship. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar became the No. 1 all-time scorer. Adrian Dantley won his second scoring title and lifted Utah to its first division title. Ralph Sampson (21 ppg, 11 rpg) was rookie of the year. Detroit beat Denver 186-184 in triple OT – the highest-scoring game ever. The NBA expanded its playoffs to 16 teams.
