Long-time broadcast journalist Bill Daughtry to emcee event and John Dewan, the founder of STATS INC to participate in panel discussion with other baseball insiders
GLEN HEAD, NY – DEC. 30, 2010 – Bill Daughtry, a popular voice in the New York media, and John Dewan, the founder of STATS INC, will share their passion for Strat-O-Matic by joining hundreds of other Strat-O-Matic Fanatics, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the game, at the Strat-O-Matic 50th Anniversary Celebration/Opening Day on Saturday February 12, 2011 in New York City.
The free event, which will run from 7:30 am-6:00 pm at the Community Church of New York (40 East 35th Street) will be like a convention, with a variety of speakers, panels, celebrity Strat-O-Matic guests and interactive discussions about the game. The venue will even have a game room for pick-up games.
Daughtry, who has played Strat-O for more than 35 years, will serve as the emcee for the morning festivities. One of New York’s most popular and respected sports broadcasters for more than two decades, he is currently the voice of the NY Knicks on ESPN Radio and MSG Network.
Dewan, who also grew up playing Strat-O, left a highly successful career as an insurance actuary in 1987 to pursue his life-long dream, the development of the most timely and comprehensive computer database in sports. He became the Executive Director of Project Scoresheet, the Bill James-led effort that pioneered a new wave of baseball statistics that are now commonplace. After that, he launched Sports Team Analysis and Tracking Systems, Inc. (STATS, Inc.). The success of the company culminated in its sale to an affiliate of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation and Fox Broadcasting in December 1999. In March 2002, he reunited with former STATS executive Steve Moyer to launch Baseball Info Solutions (www.baseballinfosolutions.com). Dewan is also co-owner of ACTA Publications and has authored two volumes of The Fielding Bible, the new groundbreaking books on baseball defense. The Fielding Bible — Volume II was released in February of 2009.
The highlight of the festivities will be a state of the company address by Strat-O-Matic inventor Hal Richman. Other speakers and panel discussions will include lifelong Strat-O player, former baseball star and current ESPN broadcaster Doug Glanville; Glenn Guzzo, author of the book Strat-O-Matic Fanatics; a Q&A with board game and video game researchers and developers; plus a few celebrity Strat-O players and fantasy sports game icons.
Glanville will also be signing copies of his New York Times best-selling book, The Game From Where I Stand – A Ballplayer’s Inside View (www.dougglanville.com/sports-seasons). The book includes numerous references to Strat-O-Matic.
