We’re back at it again, simulating the Wild Card games to give you a preview of tonight’s action. We did the same for the World Series in 2017 and accurately predicted Houston’s seven game victory. You can find our results for that simulation here.
On to this year’s action! Tonight is the NL Wild Card game between Colorado and Chicago and tomorrow we’ll have Oakland vs. New York.
Here we go!
Colorado struck first in the second inning of their second consecutive Wild Card game appearance. After two walks from Chicago lefty Jon Lester, David Dahl put a ground ball in play that scored Trevor Story. Chicago struck back with an RBI single from none other than Lester himself, scoring Almora and tying the game at 1. The two pitchers traded scoreless innings unless Garrett Hampson’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly gave Colorado the lead in the 5th. A sacrifice fly from David Bote tied it up in the 6th and we go to the late innings all tied up at 2.
Carlos Gonzalez led off the 7th pinch hitting for Matt Holliday and made his impact felt immediately with a long blast to left that put Colorado ahead. Trevor Story knocked in another run with a base hit just out of Bote’s reach in the 8th. Wade Davis nailed down the door in the 9th inning and Colorado will move on with the 4-2 win!
