After winning the National League West division, Los Angeles was considered a heavy underdog in the 1988 postseason, including against Oakland in the World Series. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game One, with LA trailing 4-3, a hobbled Kurt Gibson was sent up to the plate as a pinch hitter and… well, you know the rest. Gibson launched a walk-off two-run homer off Oakland Closer Dennis Eckersley and made his famous fist-pumping trot around the bases as LA would go on to win the series 4 games to 1.
