One of the most historic seasons ever featured the Philadelphia Phillies’ first World Series title in its 180-plus year history and the Kansas City Royals’ first World Series appearance. KC’s George Brett made the most serious run at a .400 batting average since Ted Williams in 1941. A dozen players made impressive contributions to their future Hall of Fame credentials.
One of the most exciting seasons ever featured many superstars, among them NL MVP Mike Schmidt (48 HR, 121 RBI, .624 slugging), AL MVP Brett (.390 BA, .454 OBP, .664 slugging), NL Cy Young Steve Carlton (24 wins, 286 strikeouts) and AL Cy Young Steve Stone (25 wins). Rickey Henderson had 100 stolen bases. Reggie Jackson hit .300 for the only time and led the AL with 41 HR. Eddie Murray, Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Bruce Sutter, Don Sutton, Goose Gossage and Nolan Ryan also had huge years.
