The mighty Pittsburgh Crawfords of the 1930s had all they wanted this year from two worthy foes, winning the pennant by one game over the Indianapolis Giants (88-56, recently relocated from Chicago) and by two games over the pitching-rich Philadelphia Stars (87-57).

Chicago showcased the league’s top winners, Big Bill Foster (24-7) and Willie Powell (24-10). Philadelphia had two 20-game winners of their own, Webster McDonald (22-13) and Paul Carter (20-17). Leroy Matlock (22-10) led the Craws, Ray Brown (22-7) the Homestead Grays (77-67), and Baltimore’s (66-78) Slim Jones (21-10) was the other to win 20. Satchel Paige (10-8; 2.30 ERA) of the Craws compiled the lowest ERA, though in only 23 starts/184 innings.

The Crawfords’ Josh Gibson (.359; 40 HR; 125 RBI; 1.112 OPS) smashed his way to a Triple Crown, with stiff competition from teammate Oscar Charleston (.319; 33; 119; 1.016). The Giants’ Turkey Stearnes (.338; 28; 118; .999) could smash wherever his home park. The Stars duo of Jud Wilson (.352; 12; 76; .955) and Rap Dixon (.328; 18; 100; .951) provided balance to Philadelphia’s strong staff. NY’s (75-69) John Beckwith (.331; 29; 105; .987), Havana’s (64-80) Lazaro Salazar (.344; 15; 90; .956) and Columbus’ (52-92) Jabbo Andrews (.319; 22; 88; .901) also breached 900 OPS.
