Full Summary

A season shortened by labor issues became one of the NHL’s most historic seasons once it started. Chicago began a dream season with a record 24-game unbeaten streak and twice came from behind in playoff series to win its second Stanley Cup in four seasons. The Blackhawks finished an epic Finals series – the first Chicago-Boston Finals ever in 87 seasons – with the fastest tying and clinching goals (17 seconds apart) ever. The winning goal at 19:01 of the third period was the latest Cup-clinching goal in regulation ever.

The playoffs featured all of the Original Six franchises for the first time in 17 seasons. The semi-finals featured the last four Cup winners. For all of Chicago’s success, including a league-best 77 points in 48 games, the Hawks did not have a finalist for the Hart (MVP), Vezina (top goalie) or Norris (top defenseman) trophies. This set features stars across the league, including top scorers Alex Ovechkin (league-leading 32 goals), Martin St. Louis (league leader in assists and points), Sidney Crosby, Steven Stamkos and Hart finalist John Tavares, whose 28 goals led the long-dormant New York Islanders back into the playoffs. Young Sergei Bobrovsky’s performance in net nearly gave Columbus its first playoff berth, while New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and San Jose netminder Antii Niemi also starred. Minnesota’s Ryan Suter, Montreal’s P.K. Subban and Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang were the top blueliners.

Strat-O-Matic season card sets have 18 players (16 skaters, 2 goalies) per team. To use four full lines and three defensive pairings, we recommend the Additional Players set. While some Additional Players saw limited ice time, this set also includes full-season players who were “bumped” off the top 18 on their teams because of major players who switched teams at the NHL’s late trade deadline.
