Full Summary

Their age was showing in a fourth-place Eastern Conference finish behind 57-win Baltimore and 55-win Philadelphia and New York, but Bill Russell’s Celtics had enough (and first-time regular John Havlicek) to beat the Sixers, Knicks and Wilt Chamberlain’s Lakers (in a seven-game final) for their 10th NBA title in 11 seasons – the league’s all-time dynasty … Los Angeles might have thought it was their turn after trading for Chamberlain to join Jerry West and Elgin Baylor, and that did produce 55 wins, but the Lakers could not win Game Seven on its home floor … Meanwhile, Philadelphia, with new coach Jack Ramsay and a new fast-break offense featuring Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Wally Jones and Archie Clark, won 55 without Wilt … New York also won 55 after trading for young star forward Dave DeBusschere … Not until 11 years later, when Magic Johnson and Larry Bird entered the NBA would the league have a better combo of rookies than this year’s duo, Baltimore’s Wes Unseld (the MVP) and San Diego’s Elvin Hayes (the scoring champ at 28.4 ppg)
