This week’s 3-Minute Baseball takes us back to one of the more memorable playoff (or play-in) games in recent history. On October 6, 2009, Detroit and Minnesota played a one game playoff at the Metrodome after the two teams finished tied with an 86-76 record atop the AL Central Division after 162 games. A back and forth game started with Detroit jumping out to a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Magglio Ordonez and a two-run HR by Miguel Cabrera in the top of the 3rd inning. Minnesota would roar back and eventually take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning on a two-run HR by Orlando Cabrera. Ordonez homered for Detroit in the top of the 8th to tie the contest, and the game ultimately went into extra innings. After Detroit scored a run in the top half of the 10th inning, Minnesota came right back to tie it up and send the game into additional extras. Finally, in the bottom of the 12th inning, it was Alexi Casilla who came through with the big hit, singling to right field to score a headfirst sliding Carlos Gomez, sending Minnesota to the ALDS in dramatic fashion.
