This is where Pittsburgh Steeler dominance began: Its first title of any kind, and its first of four Super Bowls in a six-year period.

With Mean Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Mel Blount, Jack Lambert and dominating, Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain defense led the league in sacks (52) by far, takeaways (47), yards allowed (330 better than the next best team) and completion percentage (a suffocating 43.4 percent), then in the post-season shutdown O.J. Simpson, stifled Oakland’s league-best offense and outscored Minnesota’s offense in the Super Bowl, 2-0.

Six other teams equaled or bettered Pittsburgh’s 10-4 season record. Oakland, Minnesota, Miami, LA, St. Louis and Washington all had excellent blends of offense and defense.

This season offers such attractions as Oakland’s Ken Stabler-Cliff Branch passing connection, Minnesota’s Chuck Foreman (1,363 yards from scrimmage), LA’s Lawrence McCutcheon (NFC rushing leader), Washington’s passing tandem of Billy Kilmer and Sonny Jurgensen and St. Louis QB Jim Hart (who led the NFC in TD passes) and HB Terry Metcalf, who had 2,058 all-purpose yards. Metcalf led the NFC by averaging 4.7/carry, caught 50 passes, returned a kickoff for a TD and averaged 13 yards on punt returns.
