Philadelphia was the place to be for baseball at its finest in 1906 with its Giants (84-66) and Quaker Giants of Glenwood (82-68) lording it over competition from New York’s Brooklyn Royals (78-72) and Cuban Giants (69-81), Chicago’s visiting Unions (72-78), and the touring Cubans (65-85).

The player set includes four Hall of Famers (Rube Foster, Pete Hill, Pop Lloyd and elected Black baseball historian Sol White), three Negro Stars (Home Run Johnson, Bill Monroe, Bruce Petway), soon-to-be major leaguer Armando Marsans and seven 20-game winners:

Philly’s Danny McClellan (24-10), Rube Foster (24-8) and Emmett Bowman (20-16); the Quakers’ Walter Ball (24-9) and Goat Head Buckner (23-13), and Brooklyn’s William Merritt (23-20) and Billy Holland (23-14). Chicago’s Shin Norman was low man on the ERA board (1.59) with Ball (1.87) the other qualifier under 2.00.

Leading hitters were Philly’s Pete Hill, the batting champ (.346; league tying 19 triples), Brooklyn’s duo of Home Run Johnson (.321; league topping .889 OPS; SS-1) and Jap Payne (.301), and the Cuban Giants’ pair of Emilio Palomino (.303; league leading 10 homers) and Bobby Winston (.300). Cuban Giants’ Rogelio Valdes displayed his sprinter’s speed with 50 swipes in 67 attempts.
