Get ready to experience the excitement and drama of the 2023 National Football League season all over again in cards or Windows with Strat-O-Matic! The Kansas City Chiefs managed to shake off the worst regular season record in the incredible young career of Patrick Mahomes (still an 11-6 record, good for the #3 seed in the AFC) and take down the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers in OT to secure their second consecutive Super Bowl championship.

A down year for Mahomes still produced 4183 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns, as he showcased his unmatched skill and poise under pressure to lead the Chiefs to their third title in five seasons. Tight end Travis Kelce was once again his go-to receiver. The future Hall of Famer’s 93 receptions and 984 receiving yards were third-most and second-most among NFL-tight ends, respectively. Rookie receiver Rashee Rice led the Chiefs with seven receiving touchdowns and finished the year with 938 yards, stepping up as a receiving threat for Mahomes.

The 49ers were formidable opponents and likely the best overall team throughout the year. San Francisco’s balanced attack and stifling defense, anchored by Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, made them one of the toughest teams to beat. The offensive skill group is tops in the league with stars at every position: quarterback Brock Purdy, all-purpose and all-pro RB Christian McCaffrey, the versatile Deebo Samuel, WR Brandon Aiyuk (who led the team in catches and receiving yards), and all-pro tight end George Kittle.

Rookie records stood no chance against this year’s crop of freshman players. 5^th round rookie receiver Puka Nacua set the league on fire from Day 1. Nacua seemed to set a new rookie receiving record every week on the way to setting new rookie standards for both receiving yards (1,486) and receptions (105) by the end of the season. Sam LaPorta, tight end for Detroit, paired with Jahmyr Gibbs, running back, to become the first pair of rookie teammates to each score 10 touchdowns. LaPorta’s 82 receptions also broke the rookie tight end record. Quarterback C.J. Stroud revitalized a Houston Texans team, which had failed to win more than four games in any of the prior three seasons, and took them to a division title. The Texans wild card round demolition of the Cleveland Browns made Stroud, 22, the youngest QB to ever win a playoff game.

Somehow, we’ve gone this far without mentioning league MVP Lamar Jackson. The dual-threat QB was Baltimore’s leading rusher and guided the team to a 13-4 record and the top seed in the AFC despite major injuries to multiple offensive players. The Ravens scored 483 points, good for 4^th best in the league while the defense was tops in the league allowing only 280 points (16.5 per game).

The three sizzling offenses who bested Baltimore were the 49ers (491 points), Miami Dolphins (496 points), and the Dallas Cowboys (509 points). Division winners Dallas and the Detroit Lions matched San Francisco’s 12-wins for best in the NFC. Among 11-win teams, Buffalo and Kansas City secured division titles while Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia entered the post-season as wild cards.

A captivating post-season storyline begins with Detroit’s first post-season victory since 1991 in the Wild Card Round, as they beat the Los Angeles Rams 24-23. The Lions then disposed of NFC South Champs Tampa Bay 31-23 before falling in the NFC Championship Game to the 49ers, 34-31. Fans were treated to another classic KC-Buffalo playoff game, where an almost 7-minute comeback drive by the Bills fell short on a missed field goal. Kansas City advanced to the Super Bowl by taking down MVP Jackson and the Ravens, 17-10.

Gamers can now relive all the excitement and drama of the 2023 season with Strat-O-Matic’s board game and Windows game. Three receivers had over 1,500 yards on the season: Tyreek Hill (1,799, 13 TDs), CeeDee Lamb (1,749, 12 TDs) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (1,515, 10 TDs). Nine other players secured at least 100 catches on the season: Evan Engram, Michael Pittman Jr., Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs, A.J. Brown, Nacua, Davante Adams, Adam Thielen, and Ja’Marr Chase. And don’t forget about Justin Jefferson, who caught 68 passes but in only 10 games and averaged 107 yards per game, second-best in the league.

Twelve players reached 1,000 yards on the ground and ten had double-digit rushing touchdowns, none more than the 18 from Miami running back Raheem Mostert. Quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen each had a staggering 15 rushing scores.
