Latino and Caribbean Stars
- Expansion: A roster compatible with SOM’s Cuban stars players
- League of Their Own: 4 Teams with 40 Players Each
- Beisbol Lation: The best of Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the Caribbean Basin
Brand new this year for our Windows game (no cards) is our Latino & Caribbean Stars set. Comprised of four teams representing the very best from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and a 4th team we call Caribbean Basin, which is comprised of players from Colombia, Curacao, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Virgin Islands.
Rated for a 156-game schedule, each team is rostered with 40 players (26 batters/14 pitchers.) These are four great teams loaded with outstanding players.
The Dominican Republic roster is stacked. Marichal and Pedro front the rotation. The bullpen is boosted by debut Star cards Benitez, Dotel, Cordero, and Borbon. Hanley and Manny Ramirez, Pujols, Ortiz, Vlad, and Beltre are a modern Murderer’s Row. Debut Star cards Carty, Mondesi, Soriano, and Cuban HoFer and Negro Star Tetelo Vargas are available on the bench.
Puerto Rico’s strong lineup features Alomar, Beltran, Clemente, I-Rod, and the Cepedas, father and son. (3B Perucho Cepeda, an icon of PR baseball, makes his Star card debut.) Pancho Coimbre, the OF who starred in winter ball and the Negro Leagues, also makes his Star card debut. Debut Star cards Guillermo and Roberto Hernandez man the back of the pen.
Venezuela was a winter ball hotbed but, unlike Cuba, DR and PR, didn’t start producing world-class baseball players until into the 1950s. Since then though, wow. Venezuela doesn’t have the wattage of those islands but has a very capable roster. Aparicio, Abreu, Ordonez, and Santana are supported by Star card debuts Alfonzo, Galarraga, Tovar, Armas, and Petagine’s dynamite NPB equivalence. With Venezuela being famous for its abundance of dazzling shortstops, Concepcion, Vizquel, and Star card debut Carrasquel join Aparicio with “1” ratings.
Caribbean Basin relies heavily on Mexico for its pitching. Valenzuela and debut Star cards Higuera, Valdez, and Gallardo are among its top 6 starters. Then there’s debut Stars Rincon and Soria to set up for Rivera. Carew and Jones are helped by debut Stars Chili Davis, Oglivie, Carlos Ruiz, Renteria, Carlos Lee, and Negro League new Star SS Pee Wee Austin. The basin also features our one “ringer” in the set, as San Diego native Adrian Gonzalez, who was ever-present in Mexico’s WBC teams, again represents Mexico here.
Otherwise, all of the players in this massive set are native-born, with 105 of them being new Star cards unique to this offering. As we do with these Specialty Star sets, if a card exists in a different set, we clone that card. A small number of players you might expect to find are not included as we anticipate their Star card appearing in a future Hero or Hall of Fame release.
It is a great thrill to release this Special set that allows you to immerse yourself in the exceptional quality of Latino baseball. When considering each island’s size and population, they’ve played an outsized role in the growth of the game. With Latino & Caribbean Stars, along with sister set Cuba All-Time Stars, you can feel that excitement and importance.
