Full Summary
Many consider the expansion Mets to be the worst team since at least 1900. And yet, they are beloved for their futility. They lost their first 9 games, were eliminated from the pennant race on Aug. 6 and finished 60 ½ games behind first-place San Francisco. Manager Casey Stengel asked, “Can’t anybody here play this game?” After hitting .306, future Hall of Fame OF Richie Ashburn retired rather than return to play another season with this team.
