Congratulations to Dale Weiser of North Royalton, Ohio on winning our Strat-O-Matic Football League Story Promotion. Thanks to everyone else who participated. See below for Dale’s story, titled "A ‘Hive-Stakes’ Game of Strat-O-Matic Football." Enjoy!
A ‘HIVE-STAKES’ GAME OF STRAT-O-MATIC FOOTBALL
It is 1986 and we are all 16 to 18 year olds in our 12-team SOM football league. The league consists of kids from the neighborhood and my brothers.
Well, the only player we would let in younger than 16 is my brother, Dave. Dave is just 12 years old, but one of the best managers in the league – he knows his cards, strategies and the game inside and out. Plus, he has the Denver Broncos with John Elway.
Four of the teams make the playoffs and Dave’s Broncos are playing in the semi-finals.
He scores a game-tying touchdown with 15 seconds left. The extra point 2-11 would win the game and send him to the first-ever league Super Bowl for a dramatic come from behind victory that Elway and the Broncos are known for, especially in Cleveland, where we are all from.
He rolls a ……. 12 MISS!
And he loses in overtime.
The second his opponent scores in sudden death, he stands up, walks straight upstairs to a back bedroom and locks the door.
A half hour later, we go to check on him and he is not responding.
An hour later, we get him to respond and he asks for us to get mom because something is very wrong with him.
Hurriedly, my mom rushes to the door and he opens it.
He had HUGE red bumps all over his face and body. He had worked himself up so badly that he had broken out in HIVES!!!
He still never lives this story down whenever we talk about Strat.
That same group also had a walk-off homer to end their first baseball Strat World Series after a long season in 1982 (Game 7, bottom of the 9th, 2 out 2-run homer down 1 run to win). I remember because I was on the losing end…
