Eight balls, not nine, were needed for a walk beginning in 1880. Pitchers still threw from below the waist and batters still could call for high balls or low. Gentlemanly rules “warned” a batter that he had three strikes – so he got a fourth before striking out. Regardless of the rules, few teams ever put it all together better than the Chicago White Stockings of 1880. They were the first team to have two 20-game winners, rookie Larry Corcoran (43 wins, 1.95 ERA, league-best 268 Ks) and Fred Goldsmith (21 wins in 26 appearances, 1.75 ERA). 1B Cap Anson hit .337 in the first of his 19 years managing the club. Anson, George Gore (.360), Abner Dalrymple (.330) and Tom Burns (.309) gave the Pale Hose four of the league’s top five hitters. King Kelly also joined Chicago for the first of seven starring seasons.
