Champion Chicago (56-28) averaged 6.55 runs per game, the equivalent of 1,060 runs today. The White Stockings’ Cap Anson led all batters with a .399 average, .952 OPS, 82 RBI and 175 total bases. Teammates King Kelly and Abner Dalrymple were 3-4 in total bases.

Other future Hall of Famers starred this year. 1B Dan Brouthers led the circuit in HR (8) and slugging (.541) for third-place Buffalo, while teammate Pud Galvin won 28 games. Second-place Providence boasted pitching stars Old Hoss Radbourn and John Montgomery Ward.

In the new six-team American Association, Cincinnati (55-25) ruled with 40-game winner Will White and future Hall of Famer Bid McPhee. Third-place Louisville answered with 30-game winner Tony Mullane and OF Pete Browning, who led the league with a .378 BA, .430 OBP and .510 slugging.
