Full Summary

After the Union Association’s collapse, two leagues of eight teams each survived, featuring 16 future Hall of Famers: Cap Anson, Dan Brouthers, John Clarkson, Roger Connor, King Kelly, Tim Keefe, Old Hoss Radbourn, Sam Thompson and more. With Anson, Kelly, Abner Dalrymple and George Gore each scoring 100 or more runs, and with Clarkson winning 53 games, Chicago won the National League title in a dramatic pennant race with New York, which had Connor (.371), Keefe (32-13, 1.58) and Mickey Welch (44-11, 1.66).

In the American Association, player-manager Charlie Comiskey’s St. Louis Browns hit only .246 but was second in the league in scoring and won the title through aggressive base-running and intimidation by players and coaches alike. After this season, coaching boxes were added down the base lines to confine Comiskey and fellow coach Bill Gleason. Pitchers Bob Carruthers (40-13, 2.07) and Dave Foutz (33-14, 2.63) gave the Browns the AA’s best pitching.

The best-of-seven series between champions included a tie and a forfeit after Comiskey pulled his team in protest over an umpire’s call with his team trailing. Counting that as a loss, the teams split six decisions. But St. Louis claimed a title that was never awarded because the teams had agreed to play the final game as the series-decider.
