In the National League, the pennant-winning Boston Beaneaters (87-51) were 3 ½ games better than the Chicago Colts thanks to such luminaries as pitchers John Clarkson and Kid Nichols, who each won 30 games to strengthen their Hall-of-Fame credentials. They had hitting help from Herman Long (.282 average, 129 runs) and Harry Stovey (.279 with 16 HR).

The final American Association pennant was won by the Boston Reds, whose 93-42 record was 8 ½ games better than the St. Louis Browns. The AA went out with a bang, featuring such superstars as Dan Brouthers (.350), Hugh Duffy (.336), Tom Brown (.321 and league-best 177 runs). Pitchers George Haddock (34 wins, 2.49 ERA) and Charlie Buffington (29 wins, 2.55 ERA) paced the pitchers.

The team rosters are rich in future Hall of Famers – 29 in all. Rookie pitcher Clark Griffith and rookie infielder John McGraw joined Cap Anson, Jake Beckley, Dan Brouthers, Jesse Burkett, John Clarkson, Charlie Comiskey, Roger Connor, George Davis, Ed Delahanty, Hugh Duffy, Buck Ewing, Pud Galvin, Billy Hamilton, Hughie Jennings, Tim Keefe, Joe Kelley, King Kelly, Tommy McCarthy, Bid McPhee, Kid Nichols, Jim O’Rourke, Old Hoss Radbourn, Amos Russie, Sam Thompson, John Ward, Mickey Welch, and Cy Young.
