Until this year, the New York-to-Philadelphia corridor was the fulcrum of Negro League baseball. The power shifted to Chicago, where the brilliant Chicago American Giants (89-61) led the league in runs scored and trailed only the Havana Cubans (78-72) for least runs allowed.

New York’s (77-73) Smokey Joe Williams, the league’s 30-game winner (30-10), formed a mighty tandem with Dick Redding (26-12). Havana also boasted a 20-win pair, Jose Mendez (23-8; league low 1.85 ERA) and Jose Junco (20-10). Brooklyn (65-85) boasted of Frank Wickware (25-16; league-high 224 Ks), Indianapolis (73-77) of Sapho Bartlett (22-15) and St. Louis (68-82) of Walter Ball (21-13). Chicago sported a quartet of top hurlers – Lightning Lindsay (27-11), Big Bill Gatewood (20-9), Pat Dougherty (17-11), and the inexorable Rube Foster (17-7).

Chicago’s Pete Hill (.361; .918 OPS) was the champion batsman, though Brooklyn’s emerging double-duty star Hurley McNair batted .383 (1.008 OPS) with 9 HRs in his 90 games. Indianapolis’ Ben Taylor hit (.350; .946) and pitched (13-5; 3.22) great. Chicago’s Jesse Barber (.339; .865), New York’s Pop Lloyd (.341; 856), and St. Louis’ Wesley Pryor (.354; .889) and Sam Bennett (.323; .850) carried potent bats.
