The class of the six-team Negro League was Rube Foster’s Chicago’s American Giants. Pro-rated to a 150-game season, the Giants went 88-62 to overcome the talented New York Lincolns (84-66). Foster, the so-called “millionaire” manager of the American Giants, began 1916 with bold plans for an all-black third “major” league, to take the place left by the demise of the Federal League.

Chicago’s School Boy Johnson (31-13) was the big winner. Team mates Dick Whitworth (24-9; 1.65 ERA), Tom Williams (13-7, league low 1.58) & OF/P Jude Gans (LF-1; 9-5, 1.91) formed a dominant staff. NY had two 20-game winners, Dick Redding (24-6, 2.05), & Smoke Williams (23-9, 1.97), as did the Cubans’ Jose Junco (25-9, 2.21) and Brooklyn’s Howling Harvey (23-16). Brooklyn’s Doc Sykes was the only 20-game loser (15-23, 3.15).

New York’s Blainey Hall (in only 100 games) tied Brooklyn’s Santop (league-leading 19 triples and .896 OPS) for the batting crown at .333. St. Louis’ Lyons was the power/speed champ with 9 home runs & 66 swipes. His teammate, the versatile Sam Bennett, led with 39 doubles.
