1924 Negro League Baseball Windows Season
- Monarchs: First Negro World Series goes to Kansas City
- Blackball Stars: 20 Hall of Famers and 44 others from SOM’s Negro League Stars set
- The Black Ty Cobb: Oscar Charleston’s phenomenal season
The biggest Negro League season re-creation in the Strat-O-Matic library has 14 teams in two seven-team divisions, with stats pro-rated to a 156-game season. It includes 20 future Hall of Fame players and another 44 who appear in SOM’s Negro League Stars set.
The first Negro World Series is still considered by some to be the best: Kansas City won it, 5-4-1 over Philadelphia. The Monarchs (99-57) were the class of the league and won the West over Rube Foster’s Chicago (94-62) with a powerful lineup that included Newt Allen
(.284), Heavy Johnson (.369), Newt Joseph (.313), Hurley McNair (.329), Dobie Moore (.346) and Bullet Joe Rogan (.377) fronted by player-manager Jose Mendez. Philadelphia (92-64 to win the East by three games over Baltimore) had star power of its own: Tank Carr (.320), Judy Johnson (.341), Biz Mackey (.353), Louis Santop (.324), George Johnson (.303) and Hawk Thomas (.300).
In a heavy-hitting season, no star was brighter than legendary Oscar Charleston, whose reputation as the so-called Black Ty Cobb for his all-around game never was better illustrated: .396, 46 doubles, 17 triples, 34 HR, 142 runs, 126 RBI, 1.198 OPS, 42 SB. And he’s a CF-1 … Three other Hall of Famers chased him: Baltimore’s Jud Wilson was second in BA at .386; Detroit’s Turkey Stearnes was second in HR (26), RBI (113) and triples (16); Chicago’s Cristobal Torriente was second in doubles (45) and OPS (1.002).
