Negro Leagues
1937 Negro League Baseball Windows Season
- Homestead Grays wins four-team race; 2 bonus Dominican teams with Satchel Paige
- Blackball stars: 19 HOF members; Gibson, Leonard, Suttles, Day, Ray Brown in their primes
- Twice as nice: Rated to play as a 10-team league or with 1935-39 Major League seasons
Blackball stars and Latin stars galore in a glorious Negro Leagues pennant race (only six games separated the first-place 88-56 Homestead Grays and the fourth-place 82-62 Washington Elite Giants, with the 86-58 Kansas City Monarchs and the 84-60 Newark Eagles in between) and a bonus two-team set of stars from a newly rich Dominican League that raided the Negro Leagues of such stars as Satchel Paige, Martin Dihigo, Alejandro Oms, Spoony Palm and Bill Perkins.
The Negro Leagues were far from talent-challenged, with such superstars as Josh Gibson (.351/.440/.677 with 145 RBIs), Buck Leonard (.338/.402/.570) and batting leader Wild Bill Wright (.368/.427/.614). Newark’s “Million Dollar Infield” of slugging 1B Mule Suttles (.332-41-122) and slick fielding 2B Dick Seay, 3B Ray Dandridge and SS Willie Wells is here. So are pitching aces Leon Day (23-9), Hilton Smith (23-11, 2.41), Ray Brown (23-11), Bill Byrd (24-6), Leroy Matlock (21-7), Terrible Terry McDuffie (26-10) and Andy Cooper (league-best 2.29 ERA).
The players are rated to play in a segregated 10-team, 144-game league, or integrated with any of the Major League seasons of 1935-39.
