This 12-team league, offered as a Windows roster (no cards), showcases how great the talent of the league was even without a Mexico-domiciled Josh Gibson. A testament to Vic Harris’ management skill, Washington’s Homestead Grays (101-53) barely missed a beat.

With 16 qualifiers batting over. .300 and eight besting a 900 OPS, the pitchers were kept busy. Grays’ Buck Leonard stepped into the Gibson breach by slashing an incredible 124-42-14-35-134- 118-1.123 – leading the league in walks, doubles, home runs, runs, RBI, and OPS!

Lyman Bostock’s father, a smooth first baseman for Birmingham (83-71), led the chart at .356. The Cubans’ (70-84) Tetelo Vargas (.346), a Puerto Rico and Cuba Hall of Famer, topped the league in triples with 15. At 35, Vargas played infrequently in the States, so this season gives us a chance to appreciate his greatness.

Despite this onslaught, some pitchers were dominant, as 13 won at least 20 games: Birmingham’s Dan Bankhead (24-9; 2.24), Johnny Markham (20-12; 2.51) and Gready McKinnis (20-15; 2.29); Homestead’s Terry McDuffie (23-13; 2.61) and Ray Brown (22-12; 2.90); KC’s (103-51) dynamic duo of Hilton Smith (23-11; 2.60) and Satchel Paige (20-10; 2.38); Baltimore’s (96-58) Bill Byrd (23-8; 2.26) and Emery Adams (20-8; 2.52); Cubana’ Dave Barnhill (22-11; 2.58); Newark’s (82-72) Max Manning (22-13; 3.71); Chicago’s (63-91) Willie Ferrell (21-12; 3.36); and Memphis’ (85-69) Ankleball Moss (21-12; 2.87) enjoyed stellar campaigns.

The Hall of Fame is represented by Ray and Willard Brown, Roy Campanella, Oscar Charleston, Leon Day, Monte Irvin, Buck Leonard, Biz Mackey, Buck O’Neil, Satchel Paige, Hilton Smith, Mule Suttles, and Jud Wilson. Also, 21 players in SOM’s Negro League Stars set are included here as well.
