Negro Leagues
1944 Negro League Baseball Windows Season
- Origins: The early pro baseball lives of Campanella, Doby, Newcombe
- Homestead Grays win it all, topping Birmingham Barons in Series
- Blackball Stars: 11 Hall of Famers and 19 others from SOM’s Negro League Stars set
This re-creation of a 12-team league with stats pro-rated to a 154-game season showcases the power of the legendary Homestead Grays, their all-time slugger Josh Gibson (34 HR, 108 RBI, 1.018 OPS) and future Hall of Fame pitcher Ray Brown (26-11, 2.88). The Grays (91-63) finished a mere 55 games ahead of the woeful NY Black Yankees (36-118) in the National Division … In the American Division, Birmingham (92-62) had top pitchers Greyhound Saylor (26-10, 2.90) and Bubber Gibson (21-15) and hitter Ed Steele (.942 OPS).
Fans of baseball history will enjoy the formative years of batting leader Sam Jethroe (.346), a future Boston Brave and of Roy Campanella (who led the league with 46 doubles for Baltimore), as well as Larry Doby, Don Newcombe, Joe Black and others who got their chance in the Major Leagues after integration in 1947.
