Baseball Seasons
1945 Baseball Windows Season
- Two sizzling pennant races in last World War II season
- Little did we know: ’45 still is the latest Cubs’ pennant
- Greenberg returns from war, hits pennant-winning slam
World War II was still deciding pennants. In the NL, Stan Musial’s departure allowed the Cubs and Phil Cavaretta (.355) to be three games better than the Cardinals. In the AL, Hank Greenberg returned at mid-season from four years at war and hit the final-day, ninth-inning grand slam that gave Detroit a 5-3 win and a pennant. Then MVP Hal Newhouser (25-9, 1.81) led the Tigers to victory in a seven-game World Series.
