Negro Leagues
1948 Negro League Baseball Windows Season
- After MLB Integration: A Negro League with Mays, Minoso, Gilliam, Howard
- Strong pennant races: Five of 12 teams can win in two divisions
- Blackball Stars: 6 Hall of Famers and 12 others from SOM’s Negro League Stars set
By 1948, Jackie Robinson had broken the Major League color barrier and Larry Doby soon followed. But the Negro Leagues still had the power of such future Major Leaguers as 17-year-old Willie Mays, Minnie Minoso, Elston Howard, Jim Gilliam, Monte Irvin, Luke Easter, Al Smith, Hank Thompson and many others familiar with the 1950s Majors.
This season also featured six Hall of Famers (Willard Brown, Monte Irvin, Buck Leonard, Hilton Smith, Mule Suttles and Willie Wells) and 12 others from SOM’s Negro League Stars (Sam Bankhead, William Bell, Jerry Benjamin, Chet Brewer, Larry Brown, Bill Byrd, Max Manning, Verdell Mathis, Buck O’Neil, Bill Perkins, Neil Robinson, Quincy Trouppe).
The teams from Washington (Easter, Leonard), Baltimore (Gilliam) and Newark (Irvin) can win the National League, with Birmingham (Mays) and Kansas City (Willard Brown, Howard, Thompson) going at it hammer and tongs in the American.
