Now in its late stages, the Negro Leagues continued to lose talent to the Major Leagues and minor leagues. But there was still high-quality play and strong pennant races. Jim Gilliam, Elston Howard and Sam Jones were among the excellent future Major Leaguers who had roles in the 1949 Negro League.

Everyone followed Birmingham’s Piper Davis in average (.348, league-leading 35 doubles). Houston’s Cherokee Davis was the home run king (41). He (1.019), KC’s Willard Brown (league-leading 1.089, 117 RBI) and Chicago’s Superman Pennington (1.018) topped 1.000 OPS. Brooklyn’s Jim Gilliam led in runs (129), and tied Cubans’ Fernando Pedroso in triples (11).

KC had two big winners in league leader Lefty LaMarque (23-11, 291 innings) and Gene Richardson (20-7). Chicago’s Jeep Jessup (22-8), Baltimore’s Byrd (21-6), and Houston’s Heard (21-13) broke 20 wins. Philadelphia’s Schoolboy Griffith (2.57) bested Houston’s Max Manning (2.59) for the ERA title.
