Hockey Seasons
1954-55 Hockey Windows Season
- Wonder Wings: Sawchuk, Howe, lead Detroit to Stanley Cup
- Rocket Riot: Montreal fans explode after Richard suspension costs Habs
- Shining Stars: MVP Teeder Kennedy, Norris winner Harvey, Boom-Boom, Beliveau
In the last season before Montreal’s run of five straight Stanley Cup winners, Detroit won the regular season for the seventh straight time, then won the Stanley Cup. Vezina-winning goalie Terry Sawchuk and 29-goal scorer Gordie Howe once again made the difference. But Montreal held the regular season lead before star Maurice “Rocket” Richard was suspended for the last three games and the playoffs. Habs fans literally rioted at the Forum. Their Canadiens had the league’s top three scorers – Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion (38-37-75), Richard (38-36-74) and Jean Beliveau (37-36-73), Norris Trophy winner Doug Harvey and rookie goalie Jacques Plante.
Toronto’s Teeder Kennedy was the league MVP and Chicago’s Ed Litzenberger was the top rookie.
