Full Summary

All 12 NFL teams are rated for this Windows game.

Frank Gifford led the Giants in rushing, receiving and scoring. But it was the top-ranked defense that made this team famous. With an impregnable DL of DE’s Andy Robustelli and Jim Katcavage and DT’s Rosey Grier and Dick Modzelweski, hard-hitting rookie MLB Sam Huff and Hall-of-Fame DBs Emlen Tunnell and Jimmy Patton, the Giants yielded the fewest yards, the fewest yards per rush and led the NFL in sacks (32).

That defense stifled the Bears’ league-leading 30-point-per-game offense in the title game, which New York won, 47-7. The Bears had league rushing leader Rick Casares (1,128 yards, 12 TDs) and WR Harlon Hill (1,128 yards, 11 TDs), who averaged 24 per catch.

The Bears reached the title game by beating QB Bobby Layne and defensive-minded Detroit (Joe Schmidt, Yale Lary, Jimmy David, Jack Christensen) in the regular-season finale.

HB Ollie Matson (1,524 all-purpose yards) and DBs Linden Crow (11 INTs) and Night Train Lane led the Chicago Cardinals to their last winning season. HB Hugh McElhenny and FB Joe “The Jet” Perry carried San Francisco.
