With seven players averaging double digit scoring, the Celtics dominated the NBA with a best 59-16 record and won their second straight NBA title over St. Louis (46-29 Western Division winners) in seven games. Heinsohn, Cousy, Sharman, Russell, Ramsey and Jones led the way for the Celts.
Wilt Chamberlain burst on the scene to win both Rookie of the Year and the MVP for Philadelphia. Chamberlain led the NBA in scoring (37.6 ppg) and rebounding (27.0 rpg).
Other superstars included Cincinnati’s Jack Twyman (second to Chamberlain with 31.2 ppg), Minnesota’s Elgin Baylor (29.6 ppg, 16.4 rpg) and St. Louis’ Bob Pettit (26.1 ppg, 17.0 rpg).
