This was a season of great change. The American Football League debuted. The expansion Dallas Cowboys entered the National Football League, which had a new Commissioner in Pete Rozelle. And, for the first time since 1951, a team other than the Colts, Giants, Browns and Lions won the NFL title.

Led by Norm Van Brocklin, passing to big-play receivers Tommy McDonald (13 TD catches, plus one more in the championship game), Pete Retzlaff and Bobby Walston, the Philadelphia Eagles won their first NFL title since 1949, beating Green Bay, making its first title appearance since 1944. The Packers were led by coach Vince Lombardi and halfback/placekicker Paul Hornung, who broke the league record with 176 points, including 15 TDs.

Houston’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the first AFL title game showcased the AFL in microcosm. Oilers QB George Blanda had come out of retirement after a long career as a Chicago Bears backup. Chargers QB Jack Kemp was a castoff from three NFL teams. But Houston also had HeismannTrophy-winning RB Billy Cannon, the prize of the league’s bidding war for top college talent, while the Chargers had RB Paul Lowe, whose 6.3 rushing average and 16.4 yards per catch personified the more-explosive AFL offenses than the NFL provided then.
