With the Warriors in the West (San Francisco) for a season, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell got to face each other in the NBA Finals for once. The ending was familiar – a fifth straight title for Russell’s Celtics, aided by the Hall of Fame cast that included Sam Jones, Tom Heinsohn and John Havlicek.
Chamberlain (36.9 ppg and 22.3 rpg) led the NBA in scoring. Russell (15 ppg and 24.7 rpg) led in rebounding. The star-studded NBA featured Oscar Robertson (31.4 ppg, 11 apg and 9.9 rpg), Jerry West (28.7 ppg), Bob Petit (27.4 ppg and 15.3 rpg), Walt Bellamy (27 ppg, 17 rpg) and big seasons from rookie Jerry Lucas, Gus Johnson and Nate Thurmond, among more than 20 future Hall of Famers.
