- Running wild: Payton sets rushing record; rookie Dorsett gains 1,000
The Super Bowl matched the NFL’s top defense – the Orange Crush of playoff maiden Denver – against its supreme offense, the Super-savvy Dallas. Result: The Cowboys’ Doomsday Defense with Randy White and Harvey Martin broke the Broncos, and former Dallas QB Craig Morton, 27-10. Roger Staubach was the NFC’s top passer and rookie RB Tony Dorsett completed the offense. No RB was better than Chicago’s Payton (1,852yds, 5.5avg, 14tds), who set the NFL record with 275 yards in one game.
