Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Dave Keon returned to the NHL with the merger of the WHA, but the main attraction of this event was Wayne Gretzky, whose 51 goals and 137 points tied him for the NHL scoring lead, winning him the first of his 8 straight MVP awards. Despite Gretzky and Mark Messier, their Edmonton Oilers were no match for Bobby Clarke’s Philadelphia, with the longest unbeaten streak in North American sports history, or for Bryan Trottier’s Islanders, who won the first of four straight Stanley Cups.
