Pro Football Seasons
1981 Football Windows Season
- Legends: The Catch, Montana and the 49ers’ Super Bowl
- Upstarts: Cincinnati (12-4) in its first Super Bowl
- Rookies: Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, Ronnie Lott
A pitiful 2-14 two years ago, the 49ers were an NFL-best 13-3 with Joe Montana leading the game’s most efficient pass attack in a unique West Coast offense. WR Dwight Clark made The Catch in the back of the end zone to complete an 89-yard drive that beat Dallas in the playoffs, 28-27. Then SF won its first Super Bowl against worst-to-first Cincinnati. But the best offense was San Diego’s Air Coryell 30-point attack, where Dan Fouts passed for 4,802 yards and 33 TDs and Chuck Muncie ran for 1,144 yards and 19 TDs. In a season of spectacular rookies, Washington RB George Rogers led the NFL with 1,674 yards.
