1995-96 Hockey Windows Season
- Colorado Avalanche win Cup in 1st year
- Detroit’s record 62 wins
- Lemieux returns from cancer, scores 69, wins MVP
We are not making this up: The Quebec Nordiques move to Denver and win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup as the Colorado Avalanche – but only after star goalie Patrick Roy demands a trade from Montreal and ends up in Colorado at mid-season. In the playoffs, the Avs whip the Red Wings, who fell only 1 point short of Montreal’s 132 points in 1976-77. In the finals, the Avs sweep Florida, a team in only its third year of existence. The Cup-winning goal is scored by Uwe Krupp, who played only 6 games during the season, with 0 goals. The most goals are by Mario Lemieux, who did not play at all the year before while recovering from cancer and back injuries.
