Pro Football Seasons
1997 Football Windows Season
- Redemption: Broncos finally win a Super Bowl in Elway-Favre showdown
- 2053 A Ground Odyssey: Barry Sanders runs wild for Detroit
- Three for 13: Green Bay, KC, SF all go 13-3
With its explosive 472-point attack, John Elway (3,635 yards and 27 TDs passing), Terrell Davis (1,750 yards and 15 TDs rushing) and WR Rod Smith (70-1180-12) and TE Shannon Sharpe (72-1107), Denver finally won its first Super Bowl after four one-sided losses … They had to overcome the 422-point offense of Green Bay, where Brett Favre led the NFL with 35 TD passes, Dorsey Levens ran for 1,435 yards and WRs Antonio Freeman (1,243 yards, 12 TDs) and Robert Brooks (1,010 yards, 7 TDs).
Defense counts, too, so don’t sleep on 13-3 San Francisco. The Niners had QB Steve Young’s (104.7 passer rating, 67.7% complete, 19 TDs, 6 INT), RB Garrison Hearst (1,019 yards rushing), WR Terrell Owens (60-936-8) and an even better defense: No. 1 in yards allowed, only 3.5 yards per rush, 25 interceptions and 54 sacks … OLB Derrick Thomas led Kansas City’s 54-sack defense.
This 30-team roster is full of star performers from all-time greats Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Tim Brown, Eddie George and Jerome Bettis to rookies of the year Warrick Dunn and Peter Boulware and career-best performances by Jeff George, Herman Moore and others. Best of all, the amazing Barry Sanders juked and jolted for 2,053 yards rushing.
