2012 Baseball Windows Season
- Land of the Giants: San Francisco creates a mini-dynasty with 2nd Series win in 3 years
- Really: Cabrera’ Triple Crown (1st in 45 years); Trout’s all-time great debut; 7 no-hitters
- It’s Unbelievable: Most Yankee HRs ever; 1st Mets no-hitter; Nats win most of all
That’s a highlight to join an instant-classic season of highlights from the 2012 Major Leagues. In 2012, catcher Buster Posey (.336-24-103) returned from a career-threatening injury to win the National League MVP and lead San Francisco to its second World Series title in three years. He was ably assisted by Matt Cain (16-5, 2.79), the first Giant ever to throw a perfect game and one of a record three pitchers (Felix Hernandez Philip Humber) to throw perfect games in one season.
Miguel Cabrera (.330-44-139) won baseball’s hitting Triple Crown for the first time since 1967. He, new 1B Prince Fielder (.313-30-108) and pitching ace Justin Verlander (17-8, 2.64, league-high 239Ks) led Detroit to the American League pennant after a stunning four-game sweep of the New York Yankees.
These Yankees, with Curtis Granderson (43 HR) leading 10 double-figure homer men, hit more homers (245) than any Yankees team in history. Yankee Alex Rodriguez equalled Lou Gehrig’s record for career grand slams. Derek Jeter broke Gehrig’s franchise record for hits. But it took New York until the season’s final day to win the AL East, just as it did for the streaking Oakland A’s to overtake Texas in the AL West.
Surprising Cincinnati won 97 games with fire-balling lefty Aroldis Chapman (15.3 Ks/9 IP). Even more surprising Washington, with all-out 19-year-old Bryce Harper, won more (98) than anyone … Harper was part of an impressive rookie class that included Texas SP Yu Darvish (221 Ks) and Oakland SP Tommy Milone, who won more games (13) than any A’s rookie ever. A’s OF Yoenis Cespedes hit .282-23-82. None debuted more spectacularly than Angels CF Mike Trout, the first rookie ever to belt 30 HR while stealing 40 bases (49). He led the AL in steals and runs and was second with a .326 BA
Johan Santana, one of seven no-hitter pitchers, was the first ever to do it for the Mets. Teammate R.A. Dickey won the Cy Young Award with a 20-6, 2.73, 230-K season that included back-to-back no-hitters with 10 strikeouts in each game – the first in MLB history to turn that trick … Finally, the season had another notable conclusion: the retirement of all-time great Chipper Jones, whose .287-14-62 season helped lead Atlanta to 94 wins and one more appearance in the post-season.
