2015-16 Hockey Cards
- Penguin Race: The Kid and speedier kids win Pittsburgh’s fourth Cup
- Shark Attack: Top power-play sends San Jose to its first Stanley Cup final
- Capital Offense: Ovechkin leads in goals (50), Washington in points (120)
Captain Sidney Crosby led Pittsburgh in regular season goals (36) and points (85), then won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Penguins played their best hockey in the playoffs, giving The Kid his second Stanley Cup and tying him with legend Mario Lemieux as the franchise’s most successful captain. He had much help from playoff star Phil Kessel, goalie Matt Murray – who set the rookie record with 15 playoff wins – and fellow twin-Cup winners Kris Letang (team-best 51 assists) and Evgeni Malkin (27 goals in 57 games).
To hoist the Cup, the Penguins first had to knock out President’s Trophy winning Washington (120 points thanks to Alex Ovechkin’s 50 goals, Vezina Trophy winner Brian Holtby’s 48 wins and a pair of 50-assist men), prior-year finalist Tampa Bay (with 36-goal man Steven Stamkos, 30-goal man Nikita Kucherov and Vezina finalist Ben Bishop) and finally San Jose, whose NHL-leading power play with Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns earned the Sharks their first appearance in the finals.
The playoffs capped a thrilling season that had 10 teams with at least 100 points, 28 skaters with at least 30 goals and 15 goalies with at least a .920 save percentage. All the stars are here: Chicago’s Patrick Kane (whose 106 points made him the Hart and Lindsay Trophy winner) and Calder-winning Artemi Panarin; Los Angeles’ Norris Trophy winner Drew Doughty and Selke Trophy winner Anze Kopitar; Dallas’ Jamie Benn, St. Louis’ Vladimir Tarasenko (both 40-goal men) and many more.
